Fare Policy

Fare Payment Required at All Times When Riding Unitrans

Unitrans requires all customers to show the driver your valid bus pass, your undergraduate AggieCard, or pay the cash fare. Passes and fares directly support over 60% of Unitrans daily service. Unitrans is not free at the bus terminals and trusts our customers to pay their fare to ride even when the driver or conductor is not present. Accepted passes and fares are under the "Fares" menu. Unitrans is not free.

When is Unitrans fare-free for everyone?

Unitrans may operate fare-free up to 15 days per year on declared Spare the Air days by sparetheair.com or Excessive Heat Warnings as defined by the National Weather Service. Additional days could be considered pending funding availability. Fare-free service is also operated on UC Davis finals week each quarter.

According to the National Weather Service, an "Excessive Heat Warning is issued within 12 hours of the onset of extremely dangerous heat conditions. The general rule of thumb for this Warning is when the maximum heat index temperature is expected to be 105° or higher for at least 2 days and night time air temperatures will not drop below 75°; however, these criteria vary across the country, especially for areas not used to extreme heat conditions."
